The Bear Glasgow YMCA is a new fitness and community center located near Glasgow, Delaware. The $17.5 million, 90,000 total sf Bear/Glasgow YMCA features indoor facilities and two outdoor swimming pools. The 65,000sf interior features an indoor competition pool with locker room access and separate special needs changing rooms, and window viewing from the hall space. It also features a multipurpose full-court gymnasium, exercise & weight training facilities and related locker rooms. Rounding out the initial program are administrative areas for counselor offices, administration offices and child daycare.
There are several large multi-purpose rooms providing for yoga, spinning and other group-instruction programs. In addition to the facility building itself, Tetra Tech is also providing the planning and site and landscape architectural design for the 112 acre site, including a new through-road, several soccer/lacrosse fields, and a Little League baseball facility as well as open picnic areas.
Design steps were taken to accommodate the building to the site with consideration of solar orientation, building to match the aesthetics of nearby buildings and accomodating an efficient flow of traffic. Part of the site included an abandoned, delapodated horse farm which required historical documentation and submission to the Historical Review Board before the land could be site reclaimed.
